Wordsmith and Goodlawyer Combine AI Platform With Fractional Counsel Network

Legal AI platform Wordsmith and fractional in-house counsel network Goodlawyer have formed a commercial partnership that embeds Wordsmith's contract review and AI agent workflow tools directly into Goodlawyer lawyer engagements across North America. The deal targets a structural gap that has persisted since fractional and secondment models began gaining traction: experienced lawyers placed inside companies still face the same volume constraints as full-time headcount, without the same institutional infrastructure behind them. The partnership attempts to close that gap with software.

Both companies are pushing against the same underlying market force. Corporate legal departments have spent the better part of a decade absorbing more work without proportional budget increases, a dynamic that accelerated after the rate shock of 2022 and 2023 pushed more companies away from outside counsel for routine matters. Flexible talent models — fractional, secondment, embedded counsel — emerged as one answer. Legal AI platforms emerged as another. Until now, the two responses have largely developed in parallel rather than in combination. Goodlawyer, recognized by The Globe and Mail as Canada's fastest-growing legal company for three consecutive years, has built a network of more than 750 vetted in-house lawyers and counts Uber, Cohere, and Ferrero among its enterprise clients. Wordsmith, backed by Index Ventures, Highland Europe, and General Catalyst with more than $100 million raised, serves over 500 in-house legal teams including BT, Canva, and the Financial Times.
